Gombovtsi is a little-known dish of Ukrainian cuisine, which remains quite common in Transcarpathia. This dessert is interesting because the recipe is almost identical to the national Chinese dish baoji. Therefore, some researchers believe that the roots of the Gombovites should be sought in the age of the nomadic way of life.

Transcarpathian gombovtsi Recipe

Essential ingredients

  • Cheese

    150 g (1 slices)

  • Semolina

    40 g (1 cup)

  • Sugar

    20 g (1 cup)

  • Vanilla sugar

    30 g (½ tsp)

  • Powdered sugar (sifted)

    20 g (½ cup)

  • Yolk

    10 g

  • Breadcrumbs

    50 g (½ tsp)

  • Butter 82.5%

    20 g (½ tbsp)

  • Sour cream 20%

    100 g (1 tsp)

How to make

Please follow the next steps:

  1. 1

The preparation of gombovtsi begins with the preparation of cheese. It must be rubbed through a sieve. The blender will not be suitable for this, because the cheese beaten in it will no longer have the necessary structure.

  2. 2

Mix the grated cheese with the yolks, sugar, vanilla sugar and semolina.

  3. 3

The dish is prepared in a steam bath. If you do not have a special steamer, you can use a sieve or gauze stretched over a pan of boiling water.

  4. 4

From the finished dough form small balls. Gombovtsi will be ready in 15 minutes.

  5. 5

Meanwhile, prepare the main "highlight" of the dish - breadcrumbs. To do this, simply fry the breadcrumbs in a small amount of butter. Roll the finished cheese balls in breadcrumbs.

  6. 6

Serve with sweet sour cream sauce.
